From the 5-11 September, learners and educators from throughout South Africa came together to celebrate their achievements and promote a culture of lifelong learning, culminating in the national awards ceremony and conference in Gauteng.

The theme for 2005 - Adult Learning and Literacy for Sustainable Development - highlighted the central role adult education has to play in economic and social development. It also recognised that adult learning has the power to transform the lives of individuals and the wider community.
