Quality education and training have a vital role to play in meeting the growing demand for professional adult educators. So if you are looking for formal qualifications or seeking to further your own professional development,
take a look at what the following institutions have to offer:

The University of Cape Town offers a range of adult educator qualifications:

  • an entry level Diploma;
  • an Advanced Certificate; and
  • a Masters degree.

These courses are aimed at Education, Training and Development (ETD) Practitioners working in a variety of sites including development projects, workplace training, adult basic education and training, human resource development, health education, and trade union education. Students come to our courses with a wealth of experience and our courses aim to build a firm base of expertise, skills and knowledge, essential to the well-trained adult educator, trainer or development worker. The courses enable them to develop professionally and increase their capacity for reflection and innovation in the various sites of practice, through linking theory, practice and skills development.

Diploma in Education (Adult Education)
The Diploma provides an entry-level qualification at the Higher Education level (NQF Level 5). This two-year part-time programme is designed for those who have some work experience in the field of adult education, training or development, and wish to improve their practice by taking a formal university course.

The Diploma aims to deepen understanding of the field through exploring adult learning theories; understanding how to design and facilitate learning events; investigating current policy developments in the ETD field; examining the role of education and training in organisation development; and developing skills in critical thinking, reading, writing and presentation.

In order to apply for the Diploma you must have at least two years experience of working in the ETD field, as well as either a senior school leaving certificate, or the ability to communicate, read and write English, approximately equivalent to a school leaving certificate.

The programme focuses on understanding the changing professional and policy contexts, theory shifts in the organisation of learning within society, as well as providing opportunities for students to increase their specialised ETD roles.

In order to apply for the Advanced Certificate you must have either a full-time three-year post-matriculation qualification (e.g. a university degree) or have attained a level of competence adequate for admission to the programme.
