Centre for the Book

The Centre for the Book aims to promote a South African culture of reading and writing. Their website www.centreforthebook.org.za provides an overview of the World Book Day campaign and regular updates on the latest developments in the South African book world. Their online Indaba provides a series of discussion fora where you can post and receive messages about vacancies in publishing, training courses, events and the latest book reviews.

Civicus

CIVICUS is an international alliance of more than 1 000 organisations dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the world. The CIVICUS website has drawn on global best practice to develop a range of toolkits designed to strengthen the capacity of Civil Society.

Campaign tools: These advocacy tools focus on the Millennium Development Goals and include tips for:

  • Using the Media
  • Building networks and coalitions
  • Advocacy and lobbying government
  • Direct Action
  • Action Research
  • Using Formal Political Processes
  • Using the Law

Communication and planning tools: This set of tools includes tips to improve your funding proposals, and strengthen your strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation skills.

Edulis
Education Library and Information Service

Edulis provides a free online library and information service for educators who are looking for appropriate learner support materials. Edulis is based in the Western Cape Education Department, but you can now visit the edupals website and browse through their catalogue of ABET resource materials online at edupals.wcape.gov.za. The listing goes beyond a list ot titles to include a more detailed review of the content, learning areas, ABET level and target audience.

GCAP
Global Call to Action against Poverty

GCAP is an international alliance of civil society organisations that are lobbying for an end to poverty. GCAP is calling for trade justice, debt cancellation, a dramatic increase in aid and monitoring governments efforts towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals and relieving poverty. GCE
Global Campaign for Education

GCE is an international movement of civil society organisations that lobby and monitor governments efforts towards achieving Education for All by 2015. Visit their website at www.campaignforeducation.org for an overview of the Education for All objectives and regular updates on the progress of the campaign.

International literacy exchange

Hosted by the UNESCO Institute of Education, www.literacyexchange.net helps educator keep up to date with global developments. You can browse through the database of case studies and teaching materials that showcase best practice from literacy programmes around the world or participate in online fora where educators have the opportunity to share and learn from one another's experiences.

Learning Cape Festival

The Learning Cape Festival is a Western Cape initiative to promote a culture of lifelong learning through a month-long programme of workshops, open days and special events. The Festival profiles the central role lifelong learning has to play in economic and social development and aims to build sustainable partnerships between government, business and civil society.

Livelihoods website

Hosted by DIFD, www.livelihoods.org provides a wealth of on-line resources linked to the sustainable livelihoods approach including planning, project management and assessment tools and an overview of how to work with logframes. The site is designed as a toolkit to facilitate distance learning and includes links to other online resources offered by the FAO, World Bank and UNDP.

National Department of Education

Visit the DOE website at education.pwv.gov.za for a comprehensive overview of the formal education system in South Africa. The website provides online statistics, policy documents, reports, surveys and press releases as well as a listing of vacancies and bursaries.

Non-Profit Consortium

The Non-Profit Consortium (NPC) aims to foster and maintain an enabling environment for civil society, particularly community based organisations (CBOs) through law reform, applied research and the provision and / or facilitation of
support services to build the organisational and institutional capacity of NPOs, particularly CBOs.

NPC also offers invaluable advice on fundraising, tax exemptions and how to work with statutory bodies such as the National Lotteries Board and National Development Agency. PASA
Publishers' Association of South Africa

The PASA website provides an indepth look at the South African publishing industry including a directory of publishers and freelancers, links to libraries and book sellers and a particularly useful introduction to copyright issues. For more information go to www.publishsa.co.za

REFLECT offers an innovative and participatory approach to adult education and community development that acknowledges the fundamental links between literacy, power, development and change. Visit their website www.reflect-action.org to find out more about the REFLECT approach and take the time to browse through their on-line resources that will give you a real taste of how these tools work in practice

SADTU
South African Democratic Teachers Union

This award winning website www.sadtu.org.za provides regular news updates and press releases on a range of critical issues from learners' and educators' rights to broader issues of social and economic justice. You can access online copies of Educator's Voice, read about the latest wage negotiations, keep up to date with the latest campaigns or sign up as a SADTU member.

Thusanang

Thusanang means “helping each other” or “giving and sharing”. This website is hosted by SANGONET and aims to disseminate information on funding and fundraising issues, promoting good grantmaking and grantseeking practices.

The website looks set to become a much utilised resource and includes a range of tools to help NGOs with proposal writing, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation as well as an online database of donors. Regular news updates address key issues that impact on the sector including the recent proposal to establish an independent regulatory authority for the non-profit sector, which would act as a one-stop registration shop to streamline company, NPO and tax exemption registration.

UN Literacy Decade

The United Nations' Literacy Decade (2003-2012) aims to reduce global illiteracy by 50% by 2015. The decade focuses on the theme Literacy as Freedom and aims to address the needs of the poorest of the poor under the banner: Literacy for all, voice for all, learning for all.

Women'sNet

Women'sNet is a vibrant and innovative networking support programme designed to enable South African women to use the internet to find the people, issues, resources and tools needed for women's social action. Visit www.womensnet.org.za to view their online directory of women's organisations, calendar of events, job and study opportunities.

World Bank - Adult Outreach Education

Adult Outreach Education comprises adult literacy and non-formal education programmes which the World Bank sees as vital in achieving the Millenium Development Goals. Visit the adult outreach website to find out more about the following topics:
