State of the nation

Over a third of adult South Africans
lack the basic reading and writing skills they need
to function effectively in society.

4.5 million adults have never gone to school and
a further 4 million have less than a Grade 7 education.

In other words:
1 in every 5 adults cannot read or write;
and a further 1 in 6 adults are functionally illiterate.
